Lau Pik Yoke, Agnes (b. 1990, Malaysia) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work begins with stillness and unfolds through repetitive actions.
Growing up in a busy city, I was drawn to quiet spaces where small rhythms could be noticed and time seemed to slow down. This sensitivity to silence continues to shape my practice, where drawing becomes a way of returning to attention and presence.
My practice is grounded in drawing, approached through a system-based method using simple rules and repeated gestures. Each work develops through processes of marking, layering, and accumulation, unfolding gradually over time. What appears as a calm and minimal surface from a distance reveals, upon closer viewing, a dense record of labour, duration, and sustained focus.
Repetition plays a central role in this process. Each mark continues a sequence while also returning to the same action, allowing the hand to move between conscious control and subtle automation. Within this structure, small variations emerge naturally, reflecting shifts in attention and the physical rhythm of making.
I work primarily with direct materials such as pencil and paper, chosen for their simplicity and fundamental role in art. These materials register pressure and repetition, allowing the process to remain visible over time. While rooted in drawing, the practice extends into other material forms such as clay and beyond, carrying the same underlying concerns with system, accumulation, and time.
I investigate core variables across different series, allowing each body of work to focus on a specific condition while maintaining a consistent system of repetition. Rather than producing images, the practice constructs conditions in which time and attention become visible, where accumulated gestures form a quiet and continuous presence.
Agnes has been actively exhibiting both locally and abroad including countries like Greece, Macau, Turkey, Singapore, Hong Kong and others. She held her first solo exhibition titled dot dot dot line line line, in 2019, and her second, soul that repeats, in 2022, both at Taksu Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. Her works have been collected by the Printmaking Research Centre of Macau, The Museum of Typography in Chania, Greece, among others. In 2020, she received the Highly Commended Painting Prize from the United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year Malaysia (Established Artist category). She was the 1st runner-up in the 2020 Visual Art Projects 4 competition organized by MyCreative Ventures and the 2nd runner-up in the 2018 YOUthReka Art competition organized by Nandos Art Initiative.
She is currently an artist and a lecturer. She enjoys the moments helping younger generations develop the same enthusiasm for art and design, inspiring them in furthering their creativity through theoretical and experiential learning.
